Hey, dessert lovers! Sharing one of my first fusion desserts I made on my blog years ago! Gulab Jamun donuts with rose glaze! Imagine the sweet dance of Indian flavors and American comfort food, and you’ve got yourself a ticket to the Gulab Jamun Donut extravaganza!
Now, before you think, “Gulab Jamun in a donut? Is the world ready for this?” let me tell you, the world is not only ready; it’s been secretly craving this dessert crossover since forever!
Mixing Cultures in a Bowl
First things first, let’s talk ingredients. Forget about wrestling with flour, yeast, and complicated measurements. We’re taking the easy route here, my friends. Head to your local Indian grocery store and grab a pack of Gulab Jamun mix. Yes, you heard right – the shortcut to the heart of this fusion.
Follow the instructions on the pack; add some flour, rose water and the rewired amount of milk that can be found on the back of the pack! It’s probably simpler than the plot of your favorite rom-com. Roll those delightful dough balls, or should I say, future donut holes, and give them a quick dunk in hot oil. Watch them transform into golden balls of joy. The kitchen is starting to smell like Diwali, but with a twist!
Donuts: The American Cousins
Now, while your Gulab Jamun balls are cooling off, let’s take a detour to the world of donuts. No, we’re not about to get into a wrestling match with doughnuts; we’re here for a peaceful union. Grab your favorite plain donuts from the store – the kind that whispers, “It’s okay, you can eat five of us in one sitting.”
The Rose Water Waltz
Alright, time for the magic touch – the rose glaze. No donut is complete without a good glaze, and we’re not talking about something ordinary here. Mix some powdered sugar with a dash of rose water and a splash of milk until it’s as smooth as a Bollywood dance sequence. Adjust the quantities until you get that perfect balance between sweetness and floral notes.
Imagine your donuts putting on their fanciest rose-scented perfume – that’s the vibe we’re going for.
Dip, Dunk, and Disco
Hold onto your aprons because it’s time for the grand finale – the union of Gulab Jamun and Donuts! Dip those golden Gulab Jamun balls into the rose glaze, ensuring they’re coated like they’re about to hit the runway. Place them on your store-bought donuts, and voila – you’ve just created the lovechild of two iconic desserts.
The Eating Part: A Joyful Necessity
Now comes the best part – the tasting. Sink your teeth into the Gulab Jamun Donut, and let the flavors do a Bollywood dance on your taste buds. The softness of the donut meets the syrupy goodness of Gulab Jamun, all elevated by that hint of rosewater. It’s like your palate is on a magic carpet ride through flavor paradise.
So there you have it, dessert dreamers – Gulab Jamun Donuts. A fusion that’s so good, it’s almost revolutionary. The next time someone asks if you prefer Indian sweets or American donuts, just smile and say, “Why choose when you can have both?”
It’s a dessert revolution, and you’re leading the charge, one delicious bite at a time.
1/2 cup all purpose flour – highly recommend using bread flour
1 cup milk – please use the required amount that is mentioned on back of the gulab jamun packet
2 tsp rose water
Instructions
Cardamom Saffron Simple Syrup
In a sauce pan, add the water, sugar, rose water, cardamon pods and saffron. Bring to a low simmer until sugar is dissolved and you are developing a syrup like consistency. This will take 7-10 mins.
Rose Glaze
Mix everything together until there are no lumps and you have a smooth consistency. Set aside until donuts are ready to be glazed.
Gulab Jamun Donut
In a bowl, combine both packets of gulab jamun mix along with, flour, milk and rose water. Once you have everything mixed and it’s formed into a dough cover the bowl with a tea towel for 10 mins.
In the meantime, heat up some oil for frying on med/low heat.
Fry the donuts until golden brown and place on a cooling rack until all the donuts are fried.
Place them in the rose syrup to soak. Let them soak for at least 1 hr, but best if you can let them soak for 2 hrs. Once they have been soaked, drizzle the rose glaze and enjoy!
Notes
You can use almond or oat milk in sub for regular milk in the rose glaze for a vegan/dairy free option.
I garnished the donuts with chopped pistachio and dried rose petals after I drizzled the glaze so they would stick well to the donuts. Be creative and garnish with what you like !
