I mean… how could you possibly say no to a chocolate glazed cake donut?! That glossy chocolate top, the soft cakey center, the slightly crisp edges it’s pure nostalgia in every bite.

Chocolate glazed cake donuts have always been my favorite. I remember going to Dunkin’ as a kid and immediately scanning the display case for that rich, chocolatey shine. Nothing else compared. Fast forward to when I was 17 and my first job was at Dunkin’ and let’s just say my break times were very predictable. I would grab one (okay, sometimes two), and they would disappear in seconds. No shame. Just pure donut joy.

Now here we are years later, and I’ve recreated that same iconic flavor at home but healthier, fresher, and without the preservatives.

Why Make Them at Home?

First of all, flavor. These homemade chocolate glazed cake donuts taste just like the ones from Dunkin’, but even better because they’re fresh out of your own oven. They have that classic dense, tender crumb that cake donuts are known for, with a rich cocoa glaze that sets perfectly on top.

Second, ingredients. When you make them yourself, you know exactly what’s going in. No preservatives. No artificial aftertaste. Just simple pantry staples like flour, cocoa powder, eggs, milk, and a touch of oil or butter for moisture. The glaze? Powdered sugar, cocoa powder, a splash of milk, and vanilla. That’s it.

And the best part they’re baked, not fried. You still get that nostalgic cake donut texture without deep frying at home. They’re lighter, easier to make, and way less messy.

The Nostalgia Factor

There’s something so special about recreating a childhood favorite in your own kitchen. Every bite of these donuts takes me right back to those early mornings and break time treats. Except now, I can make them whenever I want warm, fresh, and made with better ingredients.

It’s also such a fun recipe to share with family or friends. Set them out with coffee, bring them to brunch, or surprise someone with a batch on a random weekday. They look impressive, but they’re actually incredibly simple to make with a donut pan.

Pro Tips for the Perfect Chocolate Glaze

  • Dip the donuts while they’re slightly warm so the glaze sets smoothly.
  • Let them rest on a wire rack so the glaze firms up with that classic shiny finish.
  • Double dip if you love a thicker chocolate coating (highly recommend).

Once the glaze sets, you’ll have that exact chocolate shell you remember slightly crackly when you bite into it, with the soft cake underneath.

Trust me when I say: they taste like Dunkin’… but healthier and made with love. And honestly? There’s nothing better than recreating your childhood favorite and realizing you can make it even better at home.

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

  • Take bowl out of the fridge and sprinkle some flour on a clean work space. Knead the dough and add more flour as needed to form a dough ball. Roll out 1/2 inch thick and use a round cookie cutter or drinking glass to make donut rounds.
  • Place donut rounds in the oil and cook 1-2 mins until donuts are golden brown. Place on paper towel to cool and dip into the glaze.

Glaze

  • In a small bowl, stir together all ingredients until smooth.
