Ah, the famous Tostada Pizza from California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). This gastronomic masterpiece effortlessly blends the distinctive flavors of a tostada with the comforting embrace of a pizza. It’s a harmonious melding of two worlds, and the delightful surprise is how seamlessly they come together.
Now, if you’re someone who dreams of recreating this iconic dish in the comfort of your home, there’s good news. Whether you’re using your mom’s homemade pizza dough recipe, store-bought pizza dough, flatbread, or even a stone fire naan, the secret lies in the toppings and the technique.
The Versatility of the Base
The base of any pizza is crucial; it’s the canvas upon which you paint your flavors. While CPK has mastered their own crust over the years, don’t be shy about using what’s available or even better, what you prefer.
Homemade Pizza Dough: There’s nothing quite like a pizza made from scratch. If you’re lucky enough to have a cherished pizza dough recipe handed down from family, like my mom’s treasured recipe, you already know the joy of watching it rise and the aroma of it baking.
Store-Bought Pizza Dough: For those in a pinch for time, many local grocery stores offer pre-made dough. Quick, easy, and surprisingly good, it’s a reliable alternative to homemade.
Flatbread: Crispy, thin and always ready to use, flatbreads can offer a delightful crunch reminiscent of a thin crust pizza.
Stone Fire Naan: This option provides a fluffy and slightly charred base, adding an extra layer of flavor and texture.
With the perfect base selected, the essence of the Tostada Pizza is in its topping choices. Think fresh lettuce, diced tomatoes, creamy black beans, cheese, and a drizzle of zesty lime-infused sour cream.
Every bite provides a mosaic of flavors: tangy, creamy, crispy, spicy, and downright delicious. Pair it with a refreshing margarita or a chilled glass of iced tea, and you’ll be transported straight to the heart of California’s culinary scene.
Tip and Tricks
If you want a homemade pizza dough recipe try my moms recipe, it never fails and its super easy only requires a small handful of ingredients.
For the beans I used a brand called a dozen cousins, it can be found at target, Kroger and Amazon!
For the semi home made ranch I love using the brand Brianna’s, they have a great selection of dressings and the ranch is one of my favorites! Pro tip, if you only have a little bit of ranch leftover you can always add an avocado to add more creaminess.
I love making my avocado jalapeño sauce to put on top as well, the recipe is super simple and health!
For the tortilla strips, you can simply make them at home by cutting thin strips of tortilla, lightly spraying it with oil and air frying them at 370F for 4 mins or you can buy them already made So many different brands make them, this is the one I personally love and use.
Add the ranch, avocado, garlic and roughly chopped jalapeños into a blender or food processor, blend until everything is smooth. Store in a airtight jar in the fridge until ready to use.
Tostada Pizza
Preheat oven to 380°F.
Roll out the pizza dough until its 1/2 inch thin. Transfer the pizza dough onto a pizza screen or pizza pan.
Layer on the black refried beans and place in the oven for 15-18 mins, or until the pizza is cooked, remove the pizza from the oven and sprinkle the cheese and place it back in the oven for 2-4 mins until cheese is melted.
Remove pizza from oven and start layering the pizza with lettuce, tomato, onions, avocados, scallions, jalapeños ranch and garnish off with tortilla strips and scallions. Enjoy!
Thanks for this recipe. We love CPK tostada pizza. One question, what can I use instead of Brianna’s ranch dressing as a couple family members don’t eat eggs.
That’s so great to hear, to be honest I’m not quite sure which store bought ranch dressings eggless but I have seen a few at whole foods.
Thanks for this amazing recipe. It was easy and delicious .
