f you remember the blueberry scones that Trader Joe’s used to carry, then you already know how elite they were. But let me tell you this homemade copycat version? Even better. Fresher, softer, and made right in your own kitchen.

And before you panic my motto for this recipe is: “Don’t overwork the dough and don’t overthink the recipe.”

Scones get such a bad reputation for being complicated or “too bakery level,” but I promise you once you see how simple this ingredient list is, you’ll want to make them all the time.

The Secret to That Perfect Texture

The key to these scones is grating cold butter directly into the flour mixture.

Yes, grate it.

Using a box grater with very cold butter creates tiny butter shreds throughout the dough. When the scones bake, those little pockets of butter melt and create steam which gives you that soft, tender, slightly flaky texture. It’s what separates a dry scone from a bakery style one.

Trust the process.

Why Heavy Whipping Cream Matters

When I say heavy whipping cream, I mean it. Don’t substitute with milk. Don’t grab half and half. The fat in heavy cream gives these scones richness and moisture without needing extra fuss.

The recipe itself is so straightforward:

  • Combine all your dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Add the heavy whipping cream.
  • Grate the cold butter right into the mixture.
  • Gently fold everything together.

That’s it.

You’ll see the dough slowly come together. It might look a little shaggy at first that’s okay. You want it rustic. Over mixing is the only real mistake you can make here.

Adding the Blueberries

Once the dough starts forming, fold in your blueberries. Fresh or frozen both work (if frozen, don’t thaw them). Fold just enough to distribute them evenly.

One of my favorite tricks? Placing the dough between two sheets of parchment paper before rolling it out. This keeps your counters clean and prevents sticking without adding extra flour which can dry out your scones.

Roll the dough out gently and cut into triangles for that classic bakery look, or use a round cutter if you prefer.

Baking & The Vanilla Glaze

Bake until the tops are lightly golden and your kitchen smells like a bakery.

While they’re in the oven, make the vanilla glaze just powdered sugar, a splash of milk or cream, and vanilla extract. Simple but necessary.

Let the scones cool for about 3–5 minutes before drizzling the glaze on top. You want them warm enough for the glaze to slightly melt into the surface, but not so hot that it runs right off.

These blueberry scones are:

  • Soft in the center
  • Slightly crisp on the edges
  • Studded with juicy blueberries
  • Finished with the perfect sweet glaze

They truly taste like the nostalgic Trader Joe’s version but fresher and even more tender.

So if you’ve ever been intimidated by scones, this is your sign. Don’t overwork the dough. Don’t overthink the recipe. And definitely don’t skip the grated butter.

Once you make these once, you’ll realize bakery-style scones at home are way easier than they seem and honestly? Kind of dangerous.
