Did you ever think garlic bread could get even better? Well, imagine a sweet and savory garlic-onion herb butter with a delicious, toasted flavor, spread generously on some crispy French bread, topped with gooey, melted cheddar cheese.
I’d say that’s better.
My French Onion Garlic Bread is like regular garlic bread but on steroids. I personally love anything french onion, which I know isn’t exactly a common obsession. Actually, my love for it started when I had the best ever French Onion Soup in Tampa at Bern’s Steakhouse (they also had the best Espresso Martini ever!)
Ever since I had that soup, I was on a mission to create anything and everything French onion, which lead me down a long, winding road that ultimately ended up with this garlic bread recipe.
This appetizer is so much more than a typical garlic bread; it has loads more texture and flavor.
I took elements of a garlic bread that we all love: crispy edges, a buttery spread, and garlic flavors exploding in your mouth! However, rather than the monotonous taste of garlic, I wanted to bring some complexity to the classic.
Caramelized onions add so much depth of flavor because it gets a candy-like sweetness to it as the natural sugar cook. However, it’s still an onion! So, it maintains a beautiful level of rich, savory flavor as well.
Just this simple addition of onion will make you forget what regular garlic bread tastes like!
To take everything to a new level, I also opted out of mozzarella and, instead, used white and yellow sharp cheddar cheese! Both of these cheeses added a nutty flavor that really amplified the flavors of the caramelized French onion.
If you’re looking for an appetizer that might steal the show, this French Onion Garlic recipe is just the thing you’ve been looking for.
