If you love samosas and sandwiches, then you are going to love this Samosa Chaat Sandwich recipe! This mouth-watering sandwich is a fusion of Indian and American cuisine, and it’s perfect for a quick and easy meal. My mom’s recipe for the samosa filling adds an authentic touch of India, and the sourdough bread adds a delicious American twist.

I don’t think I’ve met someone who hates them, but I have met people who hate the process of making them, like myself! Y’all are going to love this easy/ short cut recipe to two of my favorite dishes, samosas and chaat.

My mom was visiting last week and make a big batch of samosas for me, as much I love that she made me so many I also know I don’t have the time or patience to make them, luckily I was able to freeze the huge batch and will pop them in the air fryer for a quick snack.

The key to making this sandwich is to start by making the samosa potato filling. This filling is made from a combination of potatoes, peas, onions, and spices, and it is a staple in Indian cuisine. To make the filling, you will need to boil the potatoes until they are soft, then mash them with a fork. In a separate pan, sauté onions, peas, and spices until they are soft and fragrant. Combine the onion and spice mixture with the mashed potatoes and mix well.

Once the filling is ready, it’s time to assemble the sandwich. Start by toasting two pieces of sourdough bread until they are golden brown. Spread some green chutney on one slice of the bread and tamarind chutney on the other slice. Then, add a generous amount of the samosa filling on top of one slice of bread, and place the other slice on top to create the sandwich.

To take the sandwich to the next level, you can add some chaat toppings on top of the samosa filling. Chaat is a type of Indian street food that consists of a mixture of crunchy, savory, and tangy ingredients. For this sandwich, you can add toppings such as chopped onions, cilantro, sev (a crunchy noodle snack), and a squeeze of lime juice.

Not only is this sandwich delicious, but it’s also a great way to use up leftover samosa filling. The sourdough bread adds a satisfying crunch to the sandwich, and the combination of chutneys and chaat toppings takes it to the next level.

To make this recipe even more special, you can use homemade chutneys instead of store-bought ones. Green chutney is made from a combination of fresh mint leaves, cilantro, green chili peppers, and lemon juice. Tamarind chutney is made from tamarind pulp, jaggery (a type of cane sugar), and spices. But I have short cut to this tamarind chutney that not only will save you time but also give you the same taste as if you spend time making it all day in your kitchen. Both of these chutneys are easy to make and add a fresh and vibrant flavor to the sandwich.

Potato Filling

  • 4 large potatoes cooked and peeled
  • 1 cup onions chopped
  • 1 serrano peppers –chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 4 cloves
  • ½ cup frozen peas
  • ½ cup cilantro finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 3 tsp garam masala
  • 3 tsp ground coriander ( thana jerru)
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp salt 
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cook the potatoes, peel them, mash with a fork in a bowl and set aside.
  2. In a pan, heat up the oil, add the cumin seeds and clove, cook for 2 mins. Next add the onions and cook for 5 mins.
  3. Add the peas, salt, sugar, cinnamon, garam masala,ground coriander, garlic, serrano and lemon juice. Stir everything together and cook for 4 mins. Turn off the stove and transfer everything to the bowl we aside earlier filled with the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle in the cilantro and mix everything together.

Assembling the sandwich

  1. Spread the potato filling on one slice of the bread, next add chutneys of choice an layer with tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and a good helping of sev. Top it off with another slice of bread and put on a pan with ghee or butter. Toast each side until golden brown and serve immediately. Enjoy!
